Dear Parents and Students, welcome to a new school year. Course Overview: The Algebra II Honors course is designed for students who have successfully completed Algebra 1 and Geometry at the honors level. It meets all state requirements and prepares students for advancing to Pre-Calculus Honors and other advanced courses. Students will work with expressions, functions, and graphs; they will continue to expand their ability to mathematically model real - life situations, solve polynomial equations over the set of complex numbers, and work with exponential and logarithmic functions and equations. This honors course exceeds the foundational SC College and Career Ready Standards for Mathematics for Algebra 2, in accordance with the honors policy. Success in this class relies mainly on each students responsibility and dedication to study. Textbook: Algebra 2. Glencoe, McGraw-Hill, 2018. To keep your textbook in good shape, please cover the book! Materials: 3-ring binder with loose lined and graph paper. No. 2 pencils/or soft lead mechanical pencils are strongly recommended. Students should not use pen when taking notes or working on their assignments. A graphing calculator (TI-83 or newer) is recommended. We will also use the virtual calculators provided under the Desmos tab on the school website. Calculators will be permitted on chapter tests, exams, and benchmark assessments. Evaluation: Classwork/Homework: 15% (Formative) Constant practice is an essential component of student success. Homework will be assigned almost every day, and graded based on effort (meaning the student must put forward a reasonable effort towards answering all questions). All assignments are mandatory. Assignments and solutions will be available in Schoology. In order to receive credit for their work, students must complete the assignments, scan them using CamScanner (free version) or a similar app, and upload in Schoology as PDF files. Student name and class period must be clearly visible at the top of page 1. Assignments from each week are due by the following week on Tuesday, 11:59 p.m. Despite the delayed deadline, students are encouraged to upload their work daily. Quizzes: 25% (Formative) Quizzes will cover 2-3 sections. They may be announced or unannounced. Therefore, students should continually review the material covered in class. After completing each unit students will take a vocabulary quiz. Warm Ups will also be due at the end of each unit, and will count as one quiz grade. Tests: 60% (Summative) Tests will be announced in advance and will cover several sections within a unit. Tests will check student knowledge and skills through multiple choice and free response questions. Test items will be similar, but not identical to those on the test-review assignments. Tests will not be released to take home after grading; students are welcome to review any test in class, during WIN time. Make up/Late Work: It is the students responsibility to make up all work missed while absent within a reasonable time frame agreed with the teacher, in which case they receive full credit for their work. Late work must be completed by the end of each Unit and will earn 50% credit. If caused by lawful, excused absences, late work will still receive full credit. For each week, an outline with topics covered and corresponding assignments will be posted in Schoology. It is the students responsibility to keep track of missed or late assignments, and inform the teacher by email once they are complete and uploaded in Schoology, so they can earn appropriate credit. Aleks: Aleks is an online, adaptive platform for individualized, self-paced review and practice of key Algebra concepts and skills. Aleks is available under the Clever tab on the school website. We will use this platform for individual study and for credit redemption on summative assignments. At the end of each quarter, students will receive extra credit if they complete more than the mandatory number of topics in Aleks. Class Rules: Students are expected to: Come to class prepared and in time. Pay attention and participate in all activities. Act responsibly in all situations. Show respect towards classmates and the teacher. Follow school rules at all times. Cell Phone/Smart Watch/Ear Buds Policy: Their use is prohibited during class, unless permission is given by the teacher for instruction purposes. The South Aiken High School Code of Conduct lists the consequences of unapproved use of electronic devices during class. Accessing a cell phone or smart watch during tests or exams will be treated as academic dishonesty. In order to keep track of the progress with the Algebra 2 Honors course, both parents and students are encouraged to check PowerSchool and Schoology periodically.
